Wear non-restrictive, work out type clothing such as shorts, bike shorts or footless tights & a t-shirt. Something that doesn't restrict your movements while stretching.
This depends on how much you would like to get out of your yoga practice. Like everything in life the more you put into it the more you get out of it. I encourage a regular once a week attendance initially for beginners. To get serious results from your yoga practice one needs to attend a minimum of twice a week.
Yoga develops strength, flexibility and co-ordination. It reduces stress, teaches relaxation and establishes mental poise. Along with reduction in pain and need for medication, increased energy levels, improved circulation and feelings of rejuvination.
The beauty of yoga is that it can be practised by people of all ages to ones own capacity.
Testimonials from Tara Er's students
About 5 years ago, while driving with my young grandson in the back I turned around to pick up his dummy that had fallen on the floor...quite a
difficult feat, that tore ligaments in my shoulder...
Each time I lifted clothing over my head I damaged it more...eventually I couldn't lift my arm above my head and it continually ached....I thought yoga was aggrevating it so I stopped....it totally froze...
I missed my yoga and was getting stiffer ..so I started back, slowly ...Tara modified all poses that caused pain.....I perservered...and began over a few months to gain more and more flexability in my shoulder..
Within 12 months I had full rotation and realised without yoga it was freezing not repairing...
In fact my whole body and mind benefits greatly from my regular yoga practices...I couldn't live without it.. Karon G
“We all love Tara! A wonderful, thoughtful teacher who encourages us to really work to our abilities while considering our frailties!" Lilian Barter
For years I had been suffering from a bad neck, which in turn was causing severe headaches. I was constantly at the physiotherapist, taking pain killers and at one stage had to wear a neck brace. A friend suggested that I try yoga and at the time Cronulla Yoga Centre was offering a six week "trial package". I have been practising yoga now, under the watchful eye of teacher Tara, for almost 4 years now and attending classes three times a week. Not only has yoga stopped the neck problems but I feel fitter, stronger and it also helps with managing stress levels. As an added bonus Tara holds "restorative" classes once a month, which I can't wait to get to! Thank you Tara! Sue Ibbotson
I have been a student of Cronulla Yoga Centre for over five years, and as a senior student I have the highest praise for Tara and her teachers for their passion and dedication of their craft that they share with their students and their high standards of BKS Iyengar Yoga maintained, also the enjoyable atmosphere of welcome to all new students. “Prior to starting Yoga, my Asthma was quite severe, uncontrollable and it was restricting me in my everyday life! With the help of Tara and her teachings – Yoga has enabled me to strengthen my lungs – by specialised breathing techniques, postures and mediation. I am therefore no longer reliant on ventilators or drugs for relief – thanks Tara” Sohani
How has yoga changed my life………….??
This is an incredibly hard question to answer especially to people that have never met me. I firstly need to explain that I have many physical challenges; a syndrome that effects my nervous system and severe scoliosis where I had a major operation in 1999 to put rods and screws on either side of my spine. I also need to add that I loathed sport and PE in school mainly because it was a subject that only the fit and the coordinated enjoyed. However life is strange as it forces us to do the things that we thought we never would. After my operation and at 29 years old I took up Iyengar yoga with Tara. For the last 6 years it has been a constant in my life. Yoga was the trigger in me leading a healthy life. I now do a variety of exercise but yoga is the only form of exercise that forces me to clear my mind because it requires you to hold poses. I particularly like this form of Yoga because you can use props to assist you to get into the poses properly. After my operation I had limited movement in certain parts of my body particularly my right upper back and shoulder. Yoga has made such a difference. It disciplines the mind and the body. Honestly I’m such an advocate I tell everyone I know about it and even though I sometimes have a lot of reasons to take pain medication I never do thanks to Tara and Iyengar Yoga.
So how has Yoga changed my life? it has changed my life because it has changed me for the better. Hope you give it a try. Avanti Singh-Browne
